![]() ![]() I trust the Telefunken (The Fisher) tubes are brand new, i.e., genuine NOS. This is why tube rolling is so difficult to do properly, i.e., you can ONLY tube roll tubes which are TOTALLY run in, otherwise any comparison between one tube and another is simply not a "fair fight". I forget how long this tube takes to run in, but somewhere between 50 and 100 hours. Once run in, the balance between bass, midrange and treble is handled in a very even handed fashion. The ECC803S will run in, and their sound will smooth out. The only problem is that both rooms do not sound the same, so I've been working on the second room to get them both as close to each other sound-wise, as possible. So I have my main system in one room, while I play around with other system combinations in the other room. Lucky for me, I have two listening rooms. Still, I like both of them pretty much equally. Of course, because the R800i is a SET amp, while the Soul is a push-pull amplifier, they do have slightly different sound signatures. I've also thought of PS Audio, Pass Labs, among other brands - still, it is truly just an idea at the moment, as I love the R800i and the Cayin Soul 170i. And yes, the Doge 8 has crossed my mind, as has the Schiit Freya+, but my thoughts are that the Freya, whilst reasonably priced, just isn't as good as something like the Doge 8. At the moment, I cannot decide which pre-amp to buy, as nothing really stands out. I've also been toying with a similar idea, although my choice of power amplifier would definitely be the NAD M23. ![]()
